Light exposure is one of the environmental factors that can affect artwork over time. Ultraviolet radiation can contribute to fading, discoloration, weakening of paper, and deterioration of pigments, inks, dyes, photographs, textiles, and other sensitive materials.

Protective picture framing can significantly reduce UV exposure, but glazing alone cannot prevent every form of light-related damage. Long-term protection requires consideration of the artwork, framing materials, glazing, display location, and total amount of light the piece receives.

How Does UV Light Affect Artwork?

Ultraviolet radiation is a portion of the electromagnetic spectrum beyond visible violet light. Although people cannot see UV radiation, its energy can cause chemical changes in many materials used to create artwork.

Over time, exposure can contribute to fading of pigments and dyes, yellowing or darkening of paper, changes in photographs, and weakening of organic materials.

These effects are generally cumulative. Damage that develops gradually over years of exposure cannot usually be reversed simply by moving the artwork to a darker location later.

Which Types of Artwork Are Sensitive to Light?

Light sensitivity varies considerably by material, but pieces that can require particular attention include:

UV Light Is Not the Only Cause of Fading

UV radiation is an important source of deterioration, but visible light can also contribute to fading and other changes.

This distinction matters because even glazing that provides strong UV filtration does not eliminate all of the light energy reaching the artwork.

Protecting sensitive pieces therefore involves reducing harmful UV exposure while also considering the overall intensity and duration of visible light.

Direct Sunlight and Artwork

Direct sunlight can expose artwork to intense visible light, ultraviolet radiation, and heat. For sensitive artwork, this makes prolonged direct sun one of the display conditions best avoided.

A framed piece hanging in direct afternoon sunlight for several hours every day can receive far greater total light exposure than artwork displayed on an interior wall with controlled indirect lighting.

UV-protective glazing can reduce part of that exposure, but it does not make direct sunlight harmless to artwork.

Can Indoor Lighting Damage Artwork?

Artwork protection is not limited to sunlight. Artificial lighting can also contribute to cumulative light exposure.

The effect depends on the type of lighting, its intensity, the distance between the light and artwork, and the number of hours the piece is illuminated.

Sensitive artwork does not necessarily need to be kept in darkness, but unnecessary exposure to intense lighting should be avoided when long-term preservation is important.

How UV-Protective Glazing Helps

Protective glazing can filter a substantial portion of ultraviolet radiation before it reaches the artwork.

Display Location Matters

Where artwork hangs can be as important as the glazing selected for the frame.

When preservation is important, consider conditions such as:

  • Direct sunlight through windows
  • Strong indirect natural light
  • Bright spotlights or display lighting
  • The number of hours the artwork is illuminated each day
  • Heat sources near the artwork
  • Changes in temperature and humidity

A suitable display location combined with appropriate framing materials can provide substantially better protection than relying on glazing alone.

Can UV Damage Be Reversed?

Many changes caused by prolonged light exposure are permanent.

Faded pigments and dyes cannot simply be restored by removing the source of UV exposure. Paper that has deteriorated or changed color may also require specialized conservation treatment if intervention is possible at all.

Preventive protection is therefore preferable to trying to correct damage after it has occurred.

Framing Materials Also Affect Preservation

Light is only one factor affecting the long-term condition of framed artwork. Materials inside the frame can also interact with the piece over time.

Appropriate mounting methods, matboards, backing materials, and separation from the glazing all contribute to the complete protective environment surrounding the artwork.
