Glazing is the transparent material placed in front of artwork inside many picture frames. Although it is often simply called picture frame glass, glazing can include several types of glass and acrylic, each offering different levels of clarity, reflection control, UV protection, weight, and durability.
Choosing the appropriate glazing depends on what is being framed, where it will be displayed, the size of the piece, and the level of protection required. For photographs, prints, drawings, documents, works on paper, and other sensitive materials, glazing can be an important part of the complete framing package.

Standard glass is one type of glazing, but specialized glass and acrylic products are also available. Depending on the product, glazing can provide improved optical clarity, reduced reflections, UV protection, lighter weight, or greater resistance to breakage.

Museum glass is a premium picture framing glazing designed to provide high optical clarity while reducing reflections and offering strong UV protection.
It is often selected when both preservation and viewing quality are priorities. By reducing distracting reflections, museum glass can allow colors, details, and surface characteristics of the artwork to remain more visible.
Museum glass can be particularly useful for original artwork, fine art prints, photographs, documents, limited editions, and other pieces where the quality of the presentation is important.
Acrylic is a transparent alternative to traditional glass. It is substantially lighter than glass and more resistant to breakage, which can make it useful for certain framing applications.
Large framed pieces may benefit from the reduced weight of acrylic. Its resistance to shattering can also be advantageous for artwork that will be transported, installed in certain public environments, or displayed where breakage is a concern.
Acrylic products are available with different optical and protective characteristics, including options designed for UV protection and reflection reduction.
Glass and acrylic can both provide effective glazing, but their characteristics differ.
Glass offers a hard surface and excellent clarity, while acrylic provides significant weight savings and greater resistance to breakage. The best choice depends on the dimensions of the frame, the artwork, installation location, transportation requirements, and the specific glazing product being considered.
For large or unusually heavy framing projects, the reduction in weight provided by acrylic can become an important structural consideration.
Many types of artwork should be kept separated from the glazing rather than resting directly against it.
A window mat can provide this separation in traditionally matted framing. When a visible mat is not part of the design, other framing components can be used to establish appropriate clearance.

UV-protective glazing can significantly reduce exposure to ultraviolet radiation, but it cannot make artwork completely immune to fading.

Even when UV-protective glazing is used, sensitive artwork should generally be displayed with consideration given to overall light exposure and environmental conditions.

A decorative piece may have very different glazing requirements from an original work on paper, valuable photograph, historic document, or oversized framed piece.
